The Bastion Says Goodbye!
We promised ourselves we weren't going to cry...
Thanks for a wild and wonderful two years of blogging and Chicago comedy shenanigans.
This fanblog has been a labor of love and a marvelous experience but, gratefully, life has offered us so many exciting new opportunities that we can no longer spare the hours of work involved in keeping the Bastion up and running. (Related press release here.)
The two primary contributors to this site, editor Elizabeth McQuern, and writer Kristy Mangel, will continue to document their Chicago comedy adventures through writing, photos and videos at their personal blogs, and elsewhere online.
Thanks to all the friends we've made, and to our contributing writers and photographers, for all the laughs we've shared, and for this opportunity to develop our own creative skills. We will always appreciate our Big Poppa Nate at New York's Apiary for trusting us with the creation and nurturing of the Chicago branch of his comedy empire.
And a special message for those of you who been reading from the sidelines and thinking about doing comedy: DO IT. Take a class at Second City, iO, ComedySportz, or the Annoyance. Go to stand-up open mics. Go see sketch and improv shows. Read the AST board. Find each other. You need comedy, and comedy needs you.
Edit - 9/9/08 - Elizabeth is writing occasionally about Chicago comedy at Gapers Block.

What an amazing job you two did with this site. I can't wait to see what you each do next!

I go to like 6 websites every day, in order. Like flicking through your favorite channels on TV, and my sites were buffalonews.com, buffalobills.com, espn.com, cnn.com, thebastion.org and ccinsider.comedycentral.com.
For the next 8-10 days I'll continue this until I realize thebastion is no longer putting up new material. Thanks Elizabeth, Kristy, Rachael, and everyone else who is entertained for the last 2 years or so. I'm sad.

Really? That blows. Another editing team should take over because it really blows that this site is going down. I'm thankful that we received some great reviews on the site but i'm really disappointed the site is going dark. Has anyone on the current staff asked around for other people in the community to contribute? How long has this topic been tossed around before the decision was made? Sorry for me wanting some answers, but i feel that this site was a central point for our community and it is a total shame that there has been no one willing to take the torch.

Great job with the site, and best of luck with your future projects!

Though I've never bothered to comment or contribute to the site, I've always enjoyed it and thought you guys did a great job.
And thanks for the inspirational words! I've always felt like someone "reading from the sidelines", even though I take classes at Second City and have attempted stand-up a few times.
I guess what I want to say is: THANK YOU!

It's been a great site! Great job! I hate to see y'all leave. Maybe someone else can take over... ?

Aw, you guys are so nice.
I'm kinda disappointed that the Bastion couldn't go on under new guidance, too, but it just didn't work out that way.

A note from an ex-pat: You did an incredible job with this site. Not only did it serve fans of Chicago comedy, it helped the comedians, themselves, and built a community between the two. Thank you. Best of luck with your future projects, and congratulations on a great run.

Sad indeed. Long live The Bastion.

What a shame... I visited this site every day to see how everyone from Chicago was doing. Thanks for all your hard work and best of luck in everything that lies ahead!

that mic picture is one of the saddest things i've ever seen.

I read your blog entry about this. Fair enough. I feel better knowing that you did spend plenty of time trying to find a replacement. Doesn't seem like there's much else you can do at this point.

Onward and upward! Thanks for everything.

This site has been a lynchpin of the Chicago comedy community since the day it began. Excellent interviews, great bits of gossip, pictures, videos, all of it has been entertaining and full of good info. Thanks to Elizabeth and Kristy for the hours and hours of work they've put into The Bastion. We will all miss you.

NO!!!!! The Bastion is going away?
Seriously, this is making me sad, but I understand it's simply a matter of time. You guys didn't make any money from this and we all have bills to pay and goals to work toward. Good luck with everything in the future!
Posted by: Mike | September 8, 2008 12:24 PM
I really missed you today. Don't know what you got til it's gone, i s'pose.
Posted by: Fritz | September 8, 2008 7:20 PM
Aw, thanks, Fritz. I'll be writing about comedy (much less frequently) over at Gapers Block's Arts and Culture site, if you want to follow along there. :)

THANK YOU for the amazing coverage of such a wide range of Chicago comedy these few years. There really has never been anything like this online before. I will especially miss New Video Wednesday. Good luck with your new plans!

Is the site itself going dark or will it just not be updated anymore?
Posted by: Brad Flora | September 15, 2008 8:12 AM
We have stopped updating but we will keep the site online for as long as possible.
